Winners of the Berkeley County Water and Sanitation’s Third Annual National Drinking Water Week Poster Contest were honored before Berkeley County Council during its May 28 meeting.
Drinking Water Week ran from May 5 through May 11. Berkeley County students ranging from Kindergarten through eighth grade were asked to design posters that celebrate water under the theme, “What do you know about H2O?”
BCWS began hosting its National Drinking Water Week Poster Contest in April of 2011. The contest promotes environmental awareness and water conservations in schools.
Contest winners were announced in groups from Kindergarten to second grade, third through fifth grades, and sixth through eighth grades, with three winners chosen from each group. Prizes awarded for the three winners include $100 for first place, $75 for second and $50 for third.
In addition students also received a BCWS prize packet that included educational material according to their grade level.
The contest also leads up to the American Water Works Association (AWWA) National Drinking Water Week, which occurs every May and has been celebrated for more than 30 years. Winning posters are also submitted to AWWA to be judged on a national level. If chosen as a winner, the artwork will be featured in advertising and other promotions as they see fit.
Entries were judged by a team of BCWS employees from various departments.
