Bazzle, who surpassed the 500-coaching wins benchmark for his Summerville High School career this spring, is one of three coaches who will lead the South Carolina Select Team during the SC/NC Select All-Star Series June 19-20 on the UNC Charlotte campus. The series is designed to pit the top high school seniors from South Carolina against the top seniors from North Carolina.
“It’s a honor to be asked to play in or coach this series so naturally I’m excited about it,” Bazzle said. “I’ve coached in the North/South All-star Series before but this is the first time I’ve coached the Select Team.”
James Island’s Tom Hatley, a friend of Bazzle’s, and Lancaster’s Brett Blackmon will round out the S.C. Select coaching staff.
When Bazzle was named the head coach for the South 4A/1A All-star Team in 2008 he was fortunate enough to take two Summerville players (Aaron Bouronich and Brett Wheeler) with him to the North/South All-star Series. He didn’t take any Green Wave players with him when he left for Charlotte Tuesday, but he says it should still be an enjoyable experience.
“Conway eliminated us from the playoffs this year so I’m very familiar with their two players on the Select Team,” he said. “It will be nice to have them on my side. It’s also going to be fun coaching the guys from Gilbert, West Florence, South Aiken, I mean all these players are very talented so I’m looking forward to working with them.”
Representing the Lowcountry on the S.C. Select Team are Bishop England outfielder Zack Madden and Wando pitcher/first baseman Michael Carpin. Also on the team are Matt Williams (Belton Honea-Path), Thomas Bessinger (Blythewood), Jordan Gore (Conway), GK Young (Conway), Nick Pappas (Dutch Fork), KJ Woods (Fort Mill), Drew Moyer (Gilbert), CD Pelham (Lancaster), Josh Regan (Lexington), Josh Corley (Nation Ford), Taylor Widnener (South Aiken), Gene Cone (Spring Valley), Akeem Bostick (West Florence) and Eren Roper (Wren).
