Among the contingent competing are three athletes seeded No. 1 in their respective events. They earned those seeds in the state qualifiers last weekend.
Stratford’s T.J. Deveaux (164-08) was the top qualifier in the discus, Goose Creek’s Deandre Daniels (48.38) is the highest seed in the 400-meter dash, Hanahan’s Grant Kelley (12-00) is No. 1 in the pole vault and Rachael Austin (5-00) is the top seed in the high jump.
“T.J. rose to the occasion,” Stratford coach Shane Sutherland said. “He’s got a chance to win but it’s not going to be a gimme.”
Other qualifiers for Stratford are Ross Jordan (3200), Destiny McKnight (100 hurdles, 400 hurdles), Brandon Mullins (pole vault) and Kaitlin Dealoach (shot put).
The last state champions for Stratford were Britney Jefferson in the 100-meter hurdles in 2008 and Toma Walker in the 800-meter run in 2005.
Daniels is having a season to remember, Gators coach Joe Hauff said.
“Deandre is having a great track season,” he added. “He has gotten better each week and has the tendency to rise to the level of his competition.  He works hard at practice.”
He is also part of the 400-meter relay team for the Gators that is seeded seventh.
Cane Bay’s qualifiers are Henry Pryor (shot put), Brookelynn Doctor (shot put, discus) and Tyrell Davis (discus).
In 2012, a pair of seniors - Cane Bay’s Ashlee Eady (high jump) and Hanahan’s Chris Brown (triple jump) – brought home state titles back to Berkeley County. Davis was second in the discus and Austin was second in both the pole vault and high jump.
Deveaux was third in the discus.
Hanahan is taking 13 boys in 10 different events.
“It’s a young group,” HHS boys coach David Pratt said. “We don’t have many that have been to the state meet before. We’ve only got about two or three seniors… This team has really improved.”
