Seven Gators win power clean titles

  • Thursday, May 9, 2013

Caleb Kinlaw won his division.

The fourth annual Lowcountry Power Clean Championships were recently held at Goose Creek High School and Gators lifters won seven of the 20 divisions.
Cane Bay’s Matt Rudy also won a division and recorded the top lift in the event. His effort of 290 pounds won the varsity 205-pound division. His lift tied the record for his weight class with Stevie Wilson of Wando a couple years earlier.
“When it comes to athletics, you’re looking for an athlete to generate explosive power, and the power clean and other Olympic lifts are the lifts that demonstrate that power,” GCHS strength and conditioning coach Joe Bowers said. “If you talk to the majority of strength coaches, you’re power clean is the most sports specific lift.”
In all, there were 10 JV and 10 varsity divisions ranging from 140 pounds to heavyweight.
Winners from Goose Creek included Omar McRae (varsity 160), Brandon McCants (JV 160), Devante Burns (varsity 280), Caleb Kinlaw (varsity 180), Trevor Castell (JV 180), Frank Wilson (varsity 190) and Nathan Milledge (JV 190).
Burns was the only lifter in the event to do 100 pounds more than his weight class. He weighed in at 162.20 pounds. McRae just cleaned 285 in football workouts last month but only needed a 250-pound effort to win his weight class.
“Omar and Devante, pound for pound, have the best power cleans (in the school) for their body weight,” Bowers said. “Any time a kid does 90 pounds more than their body weight, that’s impressive.”
The best Bowers could remember was former Gators defensive back Giovante Gillis power cleaning 315 pounds in the 170-pound division.
Georgetown had eight weight class winners in the event, while Stall had three winners.
