Stratford sweeps county track and field titles

  • Wednesday, April 24, 2013

Stratford's Destiny McKnight won both hurdle events for the Lady Knights.

Stratford’s track and field teams swept the Berkeley County championships last Wednesday at Cane Bay High School.
Both were dominant on their way to the crowns.
The Lady Knights finished with 153 points, beating Berkeley (113) and Hanahan (111.50).
The Stratford boys had 177 points, also defeating second-place Berkeley (135) and Hanahan (126).
Several individuals sparkled in the championships.
“We’re happy with it,” Stratford coach Shane Sutherland said. “The kids performed well. Our program is trying to get four deep in every event … overall it was a team effort.”
Berkeley’s Marissa Pinckney swept all three sprints on the girls side, while Stratford’s Destiny McKnight won both hurdles events. Hanahan’s Alyssa Kinsey won the triple and long jumps and teammate Rachael Austin won the high jump and pole vault.
On the boys side, Stratford’s Ross Jordan swept both distance races, while Goose Creek’s DeAndre Daniels won the 200- and 400-meter dash. Berkeley’s Ezequial Jenkins placed first in the high jump and long jump.
Jordan’s time of 9:52.85 set the record in the county meet.
Next up for Goose Creek and Stratford is the Region 7-AAAA meet, which serves as a qualifier in the state championship pipeline. The top four finishers in each event move on to the next step in qualifying.
The region meet is slated to wind down Wednesday, April 24.
“We’re progressing well,” Sutherland said. “For the most part, our kids have had PRd the last couple of meets. Going into region that is where you want to be.”
The Class AAAA qualifier is set for May 4 at Spring Valley, while the state championships are May 10-11.
