Dorchester Two art teacher Daniel L. Bryant spoke to the CSU Future Teacher’s Society on Wednesday, April 3, 2013. He currently works at both Joe Pye and Oakbrook Elementary Schools as an art teacher.
Bryant shared the inspiration behind his popular Karate Dawgs cartoons, which he began to develop as a way to teach his students moral values. The students help write the stories and voice the characters for the cartoons. The FTS group enjoyed seeing a portion of a Karate Dawgs video on bullying.
An additional cartoon idea entitled Boys of Valor is also in production.  It is based on Bryant’s brothers and how they will tackle life’s obstacles. Moral issues will also be a focus of these cartoons. Bryant said, “It is important for me to connect my students to the real world.  That is why I am doing this.”
Bryant and his students’ work is available over the internet through a variety of sources. These include the following: the Christian Television Network, CTN Film database, Discovery Network, YouTube, and Airboom. He currently has a five-year contract with Bridgestone Multimedia Group. The cartoons are being shown in Ghana, Mexico and other places around the world.
Bryant is a 2005 graduate of Charleston Southern University. Although not a traditional teacher education program graduate, he did earn a degree in youth ministry. After graduating he began teaching at a small private school. He next worked as a teacher’s aide as he earned his teaching credential though the South Carolina PACE program. His work is inspiring and will certainly help hundreds of children along the way. FTS members enjoyed seeing a creative way to see biblical moral values used in the media to teach life lessons.
