Lady Green Wave claims four all-region spots
The Lady Swamp Foxes landed a player on an all-state team and all three District Two girls’ basketball teams had at least one player receive all-region honors.
Ashley Ridge junior Shelby Daly is one of only four Lowcountry players named to the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association Class AAAA Girls All-state Team. West Ashley’s Dekeiya Cohen, Goose Creek’s Ashley Fields and Colleton County’s Deyja Brown also made the cut.
This year Daly averaged 10.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2.2 steals per game.
“Shelby is the ultimate team player and leader for our program,” Ashley Ridge coach Chris Shaw said. “She is very unselfish and does a lot of things well. In addition to being our best scorer and shooter she is also our best passer and probably our smartest player. She is not afraid to run the point or get in there and battle for the boards or play great defense. I am excited that I get her for one more year and can’t wait to push her this summer to be an even better player and have a strong senior year.”
In all only 15 players made the 4-A Girls All-state Team. Also receiving the honor were Erin Gilmore (Aiken), Kionna Jeter (Spartanburg), Kentra Washington (Mauldin), Cierra Carter (Spring Valley), Jontay Mitchem (Ridge View), Marissa Runyon (Carolina Forest), Christian Hithe (Sumter), Maria McCoy (Northwestern), Taylor Yarborough (Nation Ford), Angel McGowan (JL Mann) and Iyanna Jones (Greenwood).
Summerville landed four players on the Region 8-AAAA Girls All-region Team, the most for any team in the region. Kwanza Murray, Zuri Green, Tinara Brown and Heather Chapman represent the Lady Green Wave on the list. Of them, only Brown will not return next season.
Daly and Ashley Tierney represent Ashley Ridge on the all-region team while Erica Cobbs represents Fort Dorchester.
Colleton County’s Deyja Brown was named the Region 8-AAAA Girls Player of the Year. She averaged 15.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 6.1 steals and 1.5 assists per game.
Others who received all-region honors are Colleton County’s Briana Chisolm and Courtney Eady, Bluffton’s Dynasty Mervin and Beaufort’s Jordan Fields.
Matt Legare was named the Region 8-AAAA Girls Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Green Wave to a 20-6 record with a perfect 10-0 mark in region play. Under his guidance, the Summerville girls have claimed the region title two out of the last three seasons.
