Helping Hands Board President Gene Alaura used last week’s Goose Creek City Council meeting to thank the city for its ongoing support of the organization that helps families in need.
Council met in regular session Feb. 14 at the Municipal Center.
“Thanks for your support over these last years,” Alaura said. “Thank you for helping us help the needy.”
Alaura said Helping Hands helped 11,000 families received over 170,000 pounds of food in 2012 because of the generosity of the city and the support it gives the organization. “A lot of people got a chance to eat because of what Helping Hands has done,” Alaura said.
Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler praised Helping Hands as well as Alaura.
“City Council appreciates you,” Heitzler said. “Every day you go … and give of your time.”
In other business:
• Goose Creek City Administrator Dennis Harmon proposed a $133,758 expenditure to council members for six new police cars for the city’s fleet.
The cars, Chevrolet Impalas, will be purchased at Love Chevrolet in Columbia.
Council unanimously approved the expenditure.
• Harmon said the city would be reporting to council soon on the status of the planned new fire station. “The architects have given us some numbers … and we are looking for more ways to reduce costs,” Harmon said. “We will be reporting to council soon.”
• The Goose Creek Fire Department was commended by a resident of the city for its quick response to two recent grass fires in the Crowfield area. The fires were extinguished before they reached any structures.
• Heitzler said last week’s meeting was the 999th city council meeting in the history of Goose Creek.
