The wrestling season has turned into the home stretch and only one local squad has a chance at a team state championship.
While Goose Creek and Stratford were ousted in the opening round of the Class AAAA duals on Saturday, Hanahan defeated a pair of teams on Saturday then knocked off Swansea 54-28 in the Class AAA quarterfinals on Monday night at HHS.
“I’m very satisfied with their effort tonight,” said HHS coach Ray Adkins, whose team won the last two Class AA championships before being bumped up to AAA. “Our kids wrestled one of their best matches of the year. We’re going to have to do the same thing on Wednesday (against Socastee).”
The Lower State finals were set for Wednesday at HHS after press time. Socastee advanced with a win over Berkeley on Monday.
The winner of that match will meet either Belton-Honea Path or Eastside in the Class AAA final Saturday in Columbia.
HHS advanced to Monday by coasting past Brookland-Cayce and Myrtle Beach last Saturday.
In Class AAAA, Fort Dorchester knocked off Stratford in the opening round while Beaufort knocked Goose Creek out of the duals in the first round.
Hanahan trailed Swansea to 10-6 after three matches on Monday but Hanahan got seven pins and a forfeit over the next nine matches to pull away.
Jacob Garibay (220), Tyler Talacko (113), Elijah Wortham (120), Haven Horlback (138), Brian Joseph (145), Forrest Bowman (152), Cole Zakis (160) and Dennis Flores won by pins for the Hawks.
• The four teams left in Class AAAA are Hillcrest and Rock Hill in the Upper State and Summerville and Lexington in the Lower State.
The final for the Class A-AA division has been set already. Liberty will meet Bamberg-Ehrhardt.
Saturday’s championship match times are set for 11 a.m. (A-AA), 1 p.m. (AAA) and 3:30 p.m. (AAAA). The finals will be held at Dreher High School.
