With three bouts to go, it was either team's match to win.
And Wando won all three en route to a 40-26 victory over Stratford on Monday night at SHS, climbing into the driver's seat for the Region 7-AAAA title.
“This was a big step for us,” Wando coach Adam Schneider said. “… With Stratford, it always comes down to those last couple of matches. Both of these teams get up for this match. Thankfully we came out on the winning end.”
Stratford came back from a 25-14 deficit to lead 26-25 after Noah Shuler's 8-3 win in the 182-pound match but Wando locked it up with pins by Brennan Medders and Aaron Anderson in the next two matches. Anderson's win gave the Warriors an insurmountable 37-26 lead heading into the final bout, a 2-0 victory at heavyweight by the Warriors' Hunter Allen.
“They wanted it more than we did,” Stratford coach Willie Nearhood said.
Wando will try to lock up the region championship on Wednesday night Jan. 16 at home against Cane Bay.
“Cane Bay is going to be close, just like this one,” Schneider said.
Stratford, which had beaten Cane Bay 37-33 in its previous region match last week, steps out of region on Thursday with a home match against Ashley Ridge.
Other Stratford winners against Wando included Billy Ackerman (pin 120), Nicholas Young (tech 132), Kemp Shider (dec. 138), Telvaughn Smith (dec. 162) and T.J. Deveaux (pin 170).
• The match against Cane Bay on Jan. 9 saw Stratford gain a win in its region opener.
Deveaux, Shawn Peace (285), Daniel Dees (220) and Ackerman had wins by pin for the Knights. Shider (132) had a major decision victory.
Shuler, Luke Maningding (106) and Young (138) had wins by decision.
