Passion and commitment push Trident Breast Care Center to excellence   Ann Anderson-Witte understands that no one looks forward to a mammogram. “You’re so anxious and nervous about it any time you come for a test like that,” she says. “There’s a fear of the unknown.”
Part of her work as a mammogram technologist at Trident Breast Care Center is to put women at ease, so her people skills and empathetic nature are a plus. At the same time, she has the benefit of specialized training in digital mammography and assisting with stereotactic breast biopsy, which uses mammography as a guide in locating tumors.
In fact, the team of technologists, radiologists and others at the Breast Care Center has achieved high standards in personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, quality assurance programs and image quality. As a result of this overall commitment, Trident Breast Care Center has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
“This significant accomplishment demonstrates our continuous goal of providing every patient with the best care possible,” says Jodi Barteet, medical imaging director at Trident Medical Center (TMC). “Everyone at the Breast Care Center shares a common passion in the fight against cancer, and that’s what drives our team.”
Located on the TMC campus in North Charleston, Trident Breast Care Center recently finished extensive renovations this summer, growing by 75 percent to almost 9,000-square feet. Changes include a second waiting area that is for patients only, as well as a soothing color palette and other comforting features such as aromatherapy.
The aesthetic reflects the center’s greater commitment to the women it serves through mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy and breast ultrasound, including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy.
Anderson-Witte has worked in medical imaging for 28 years, with half of her career at the Trident Breast Care Center. Her decision to specialize in mammography in the late ‘90s was personal. A favorite aunt had died from breast cancer, and a close friend had been diagnosed.  “It was just real emotional for me, and it was a good opportunity for me to learn about breast disease and try to help as many women as possible.”
And, as a young survivor of ovarian cancer, Anderson-Witte could clearly understand the perspective of patients who received news of a malignancy. “Having had The Big C – the cancer word – thrown at me, I know what that’s like.”

The message she wants women to remember: Breast cancer is no longer a death sentence, and that’s especially true when it is caught in the disease’s preliminary stages. “That’s what I try to stress to my ladies. You can get rid of breast cancer and live a long healthy life, but early detection is key. You have to get in for your mammogram.”
