SC town considers ban on illegal immigrants
Published Wednesday, July 14, 2010 7:48 AM
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) — One South Carolina town is considering a ban that would prevent illegal immigrants from living in the town and, in most cases, working there.

The proposal is being discussed on Wednesday at a meeting of the Summerville Town Council.

Councilman Walter Bailey says the ordinance is needed because the federal government is not doing enough to prevent illegal immigration.

The proposed ordinance requires those who rent apartments or homes in the town to provide proof they are American citizens or in the country legally.

Companies would have to verify the immigration status of workers. The ordinance would not apply to independent contractors or domestic workers.

summerville banning illegals

WAY TO GO SUMMERVILLE!!!! Wish every state would adopt that policy. Why a town or city wants criminals in their midst, I just can't understand.

Please remember that the house you own is owned by a house breaker. Thank you for the belly laugh, Native American

Would this be legal?

Before passing such an ordinance, I hope the Council gets an opinion from the State's Attorney General as to its legality. There isn't enough money for important things; no need to waste resources on what may be unconstitutional. That it's just plain silly, goes without saying. If someone weren't benefitting from their presence (outrageous rent for substandard housing, not having to pay the employer's portion of Social Security taxes or workers compensation, sub-Minimum Wage salaries), illegal aliens wouldn't be able to survive in Summerville, and wouldn't be here. This largely explains why the Republican Party may make a lot of noise but take no action. All you people willing work outside in full sun and a heat index of 110+ (130+ on rooftops) or clean other people's toilets for a few dollars an hour, please line up in the WalMart parking lot at 7 am. No, not you who want to hire those people, you who are willing to work in those conditions. It shouldn't take more than two parking spaces. All other than Native Americans who don't like immigrants are free to return to their ancestral countries. Their grandparents and great grandparents came here for the same reason today's immigrants come: to provide better for their families. I bet they'd be appalled by and ashamed of their descendents, the beneficiaries of their courage and hard work, who stamp their feet like two-year olds and cry "Mine! Mine!" Maybe we should let the Native Americans decide who has and who has not the "right" to be here.

Bush v. Obama
Saturday, August 07, 2010 7:52 PM

A previous poster found it necessary to cite the fact (if it is) that more illegals have been deported under Obama than Bush. WHO CARES! Bush wanted amnestey for illegals, so does McCain and Linsey Grahamnesty. Guess who else is for amnesty, Obama, who also halted construction of the fence at or southern border. The ship is sinking and youre praising the guy for bailing water with a tea cup....

25 illegals caught trying to get on Shaw AFB, Sumter, SC in July 2010 and all were released except two. Does that sound like more deportations? Don't think so.

Immigrants

I can't believe that people actually think that america is treating these immigrants badly. If you were to accidentaly cross into North Korea you would be put in jail and possibly never heard from again. The same goes for Iran, China and dozens of other coutries. Some countries you would be killed on the spot, your body would be disposed of so there isn't any evidence.
We actually allow most immigrants to stay in our country, we give them jobs, allow them to rent houses and apartments, use our school systems for free, use our health care services for free, they don't pay taxes or contribute to any other government programs that are taken out of citizens paychecks. They are a major drain on our healthcare system and our schools.
Give me a break, ALL of these people should be put on a bus and shipped back to mexico or where ever they came from. After of course, we secure our borders will walls, troops and automatic machine guns that fire when there is movement!!!

Seriously?
Friday, July 30, 2010 7:57 PM

You have GOT to be kidding me. The ban would not apply to domestic workers and independent contractors? How interesting it is that the proposal protects the two industries/employers most likely to hire illegal immigrants. All this proposal does is say we don't want illegals living here, but we definitely want them enriching their employers by working for sub-minimum wages. As long as they build our houses and clean our hotel rooms for $2/hour, we're all for illegal immigrants. That's disgusting and spare me the BS about illegals taking jobs American's want or don't want. Employers hire illegals because they can avoid labor laws and minimum wage mandates. Pay minimum wage or better yet, a living wage, and you'll find Americans lining up for such jobs. I'm appalled that our town council would even consider the proposal as written.

They are more than welcome to stay if they would do the appropriate paperwork to make themselves legal. They can pay taxes just like the rest of us pay taxes. We have to fill out paperwork when we start work, we have to file our taxes every year, they should too. No one blames them for wanting a better life for themselves, but they should have to follow the law, just like we do.

Illegal immigration made simple
Monday, July 26, 2010 3:20 AM

Let's say I break into your house. Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave. But I say, 'No! I like it here. It's better than my house. I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors. I've done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house). Now, according to all the immigration protesters: You are required to let me stay in your house. You are required to feed me. You are required to add me to your family's insurance plan. You are required to educate my kids. You are required to provide other benefits to me & to my family. My spouse will do all of your yard work because he/she is also hard-working and honest. (except for that breaking in part). If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT to be there. It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself. I'm a hard-working and honest person, except for well, you know, I did break into your house. And what a deal it is for me!!! I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of cold, uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted behavior. Oh yeah, and I DEMAND that you learn MY LANGUAGE!!! so that you can communicate with me. All those who support illegal immigration, please post your home address - my bags are packed and I'm ready to come visit...Mi Casa Su Casa.

Leave those people alone, they only want the same as you. legalize them and see if the country would'nt be better. what did you do with the Indians where are they? We are never content with what we have until we get it all. this is America fast becoming the most hated country in the world because of how we treat our neighbors.

Okay - how many of you know that there was a record number of deportations in 2009 under the new president? Which was three times higher than under Bush? And you folks still want to blame the so-called "liberals"? as one who personally claims to be a moderate-liberal, I personally FAVOR enforcement of immigration laws - which only recently began enforcement under a Democratic president. What y'all are failing to recognize is that this local proposal would exclude private contractors and domestic workers - which is where all the jobs are going to illegal aliens to begin with. Americans are being left without jobs in construction and property maintenance - and this stupid "ban" would completely overlook that. This idea had nothing to do law enforcement - it only wants to have it established that its okay for those companies to violate the law.

That's a great idea. Too bad every city in America doesn't do the same thing. Of course this will be called illegal by all the liberals not to allow illegals to live and work in Summerville.

illegals

How are is it to enforce a law that already exists? Hard when a certain political party is trying to get re-elected. In fact how can the federal government crack down on certain crimes and yet let other ones go or at least to very little to prevent it.
It's time the legal citizens take back what is rightfully ours. We pay taxes illegals don't, we try to honor and up hold the law, illegals don't and yet the politicans just don't get it. Perhaps if they lost there job or did not get one because they were not willing to work for nothing it might sink in. Good riddance to both the illegals and the politicans who just do not want to do the right thing. Vote them all out in the coming elections and send the message that legal citizens are not going to tolerate ignorance for politcal gain.
