SC bill would end voter notices in local papers
Published Thursday, February 18, 2010 8:36 AM
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Lawmakers will get to debate a bill that would allow agencies overseeing South Carolina's elections to save money by not publishing voter notices in local newspapers.

The bill set for discussion on Thursday in a House Judiciary subcommittee would move legal advertisements from print to the state Election Commission's Web site.

The ads include reminders on registering to vote, a list of precincts and location of polling places.

The state Election Commission estimates it could save $80,000 a year on notices for statewide races. County election boards would also save money.

The South Carolina Press Association opposes the measure, saying it would disenfranchise poor, rural voters who lack Internet access.

sc legislature bill to limit newspaper voting notices

$80,000 might be saved-it's not worth it, discouraging voting due to lack of information, in our state where already the voter turnout is miserable!
