COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Golf carts are a common sight in South Carolina, just not on state roads.

I also live in Bonneau Beach and have been driving my golf cart safely and responsibly for many years in our community. If you read the article properly you will note that you must have a permit, valid drivers license and insurance to drive on the roads. Meaning children driving carts is not legal. Worse by far than the golf carts in Bonneau Beach are the speeders in their cars.Bonneau used to have a laid back and leisurely pace thoughout the neighborhood, most of the drivers drove slowly for the safety of the children and acually wave to each other driving by and say hello. Since the population boom in the area in the last couple of years the automobiles have increased and speeding as well. Bonneau is a Family area and lots of us have grandchildren and children playing and having fun. Since the max speed limit anywhere on the beach is 35 and most streets less, then the golf carts arent really backing up anyone except those of you speeding and those in such a hurry that they are a detriment to the safety of walkers, joggers and bikers. After all why dod you move to an area whose city sign states welcome to Bonneau "Where the Living is EASY" not where we are in a hurry and want to speed....

i live in bonneau beach and i dont think people need to go any farther on thier golf carts. nobody inforces these supposed rules and its hard to get where you need to go with a pack of twelve year olds driving down the middle of the road on mommy and daddy or grandma and grandaddys golf carts. i mean take a walk. pass some legislation that says that. i know most of the adults that drive them are ridin around with thier coolers strapped to the bak (probably the same people whose children play in the street on them). bottom line, im tired of it. Like we need something else to make traffic worse and our crappy roads worse in berkeley county.

But legislation up for debate on Wednesday in a House subcommittee would allow people to drive golf carts on the state's secondary roads as long as they are within five miles of their home or business during daylight hours.
The current law allows people to drive carts within two miles of their homes or businesses.
Drivers still would have to get a permit for $5 and show they have insurance and have a valid drivers' license.
State Rep. Todd Rutherford of Columbia has been known to drive a tricked-out golf cart to the Statehouse for sessions.
