The Goose Creek United Soccer Club Under-10 Force kicked off their fall season with a 5-1 victory over the JIYSC Red early Saturday morning.
The GCU Force got off to a fast start when Jack Bellimam provided an assist to Dustin Lash for the first goal of the match in the third minute.
Gavin Campbell added a goal in the ninth minute, giving the Force a 2-0 advantage.
JIYSC Red responded in the 16th minute with a goal. Following halftime, the GCU Force continued team play with solid goalie work and stingy defense. The Force added to the lead in the second half with goals by Bellimam, Lash and Alex Freeman 11 minutes apart.
Force Coach Jason Campbell was pleased with the excellent effort of the players.
“The team was able to apply what they have learned on the field,” Campbell said. “The defense played outstanding and the team faced this challenge with determination.”
• The GCU Under-12 Spirit are atop the leader board of their league with victories this past weekend.
They beat the Cainhoy Athletics 2-0 Saturday and the CUSC Mutiny 20 Sunday.
On Saturday, Fernando DeLaCruz scored a goal from 20 yards out off an assist from Aaron Evans in the 22nd minute. Evans also assisted on a Ricky Garcia goal in the 55th minute.
Against the Mutiny, forward Omar Miramontes scored a pair of goals in the shutout. Evans assisted on one goal and Eddie Leitgeb assisted on the other.
“We needed a good weekend for the kids following a disappointing finish in last weekend’s tournament,” Spirit Coach Steve Evans said. “We faced some really good teams during the tournament, and although the scoreboard may not have accurately reflected our performance, we played very well for a recreational level team.
“All the kids really stepped up this weekend and played hard, with outstanding goalkeeping and a rock solid defense. I’m very proud of all the kids.”
The GCU Spirit will be back in action this Saturday with an away game in Walterboro.
